I stopped by on the way to Heathrow right on opening time and they couldn't do more for me while the cab waited as I deliberated the purchase of the frankenfinder.
My experience with Leica stores in Kuala Lumpur and in Raffles, Singapore leaves me in no doubt about the customer service formula Leica is employing - love em to death!
Not all high quality merchandising experience leaves one feeling this way in the retail trade. Kudos to Leica. I love going into the Leica Mayfair store I have no experience of Leica stores elsewhere , I consider it a real treat. The people there have two commodities which are in ever shorter supply in this consumerist world driven by sales figures and margins, time and knowledge.
It is great to watch the technicians and the sales team alike engage their customers with genuine enthusiasm born out of an undoubted respect for and love of the product they service and sell. I popped in to the Mayfair store in to purchase a 35 'cron and a leather ever ready case for my M9.
The young gentleman who looked after me was fantastic. Really knew the products, discussed the various 35mm lens options with me and had black and silver versions in stock. He didn't have the case and asked me when I was leaving London. He then made a few calls and found one at an airport outlet at Heathrow and arranged for that store to hold it for me until I was leaving London 2 days later.
Picked it up on my way to the lounge, no dramas! This is real service, from an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guy who went out of his way to assist. Further, I have bought accessories at the Leica shops in Hong Kong and Singapore and had similar great service.
I think the secret is that all of these guys are Leica enthusiasts themselves. They are happy to spend time with you and show you whatever you want to see and never pressure you into a sale. On my last visit to Singapore I popped into their store in the EON plaza just to buy some tee shirts - good service even for such a small purchase!
Buying stuff at Leica stores is a very pleasurable experience and I too always think of it as a treat. We test out six higher-end, thick-legged, modular tripods that are comfortably tall and capable of supporting tremendous amounts of gear. The Panasonic GH5M2 is a refresh, rather than complete reworking, of the company's image-stabilized, video focused GH5.
We didn't find live streaming as reliable as we'd hoped but we appreciated the improved feature set. The shop fit includes knocking two existing units into one, so the size of the shop will be substantial.
I was also told that the Leica Mayfair store is closing down which seems odd as they only just finished refitting it , and will be relocated to somewhere around Oxford St, with a remit of taking the brand into a more popular domain - they want to emulate Apple in brand position and will be reducing price - or at least launching more reasonably priced products - in support of this. I can't verify any of this but the I spent a few days talking to this chap we were staying in the same Youth Hostel , and he seemed pretty confident in his facts.
I've no reason to doubt the new shop, so this should be exciting news for Leica customers in London and the UK but less so for existing Leica retailers. I have no idea if the other news about Leica Mayfair is true or not though. Look here: Interesting Leica gear. Aperture website confirms a new store to open, which I was told will be near Newman Street, while Leica's own shop will be in Duke Street.
Perhaps Leica UK have the need for a larger showroom to display forthcoming 'L mount' partners' hardware , i. And potential customers are more likely to wander into the store 'just off Oxford Street' than visit the existing Bruton Place, Mayfair premises. Not just a new Aperture store but it says on their website that they are going to be official Leica stockists whereas previously they've only sold used gear.
Good for them but I wonder with Leica moving to Oxford street and the other London Leica dealers, just how many Leica shops can the market sustain? Bruton Place always seemed a very odd choice for a Leica store, hidden away with no real passing footfall.
Bruton Place was not such an 'odd choice' but it's likely outgrown its original capacity. Apart from the showroom and cafeteria, it's a Leica Akademie and Leica Service Centre … in fact it's a most interesting 'all things Leica' hub. I've attended lots of their events over the years. Where Aperture is now, there was another camera store Nikon mostly I think down the street heading towards Oxford St. I was recently told by a client that the area used be the center for advertising firms in London, which I suppose is the reason for lots of legacy stores and Kodak ads thereabouts.
Anyway good news, bought 40mm Leica summicron from them, nice people there.. Wish them luck. And yes the Leica shop was really out of the way. My understanding is that this store is owned by Leica, unlike so many others that are own individually and they but in what's necessary to be Leica Store. That was me!
