Officials heard of an incident involving Manzano on Saturday, when his partner went to the southwest station and reported a domestic disturbance, Acevedo said. An HPD offense report shows that on Sunday, police responded to a disturbance call at the apartment, where Manzano and his ex-wife were living.
She told police the two were living together but going through a divorce. Manzano had arrived home around 3 a. She said she refused, and that Manzano brandished his weapon at her and their children, and threatened her with deportation. A criminal background check came back "clear," according to the report, and the officer spoke to a prosecutor who didn't accept charges, based on the officer's findings.
Manzano was injured in the deadly shooting on Tuesday, being shot in the abdomen during an exchange of gunfire, the chief said. He then holed up inside an apartment and emerged to surrender after looking out the window and seeing police.
Acevedo said Wednesday that Preston, who was shot multiple times, was able to return fire and hit Manzano in the abdomen. Manzano barricaded himself in the apartment but later surrendered to authorities. Preston, who had been with Houston police for 41 years, was about two weeks away from retiring, Acevedo said. Waller has been with the police department for three years.
The shooting came amid an uptick in domestic violence in Houston and other cities as the coronavirus pandemic has forced people to spend more time in their homes.
