A whole lot of promise and talent that completely stunk it up in Toronto. What makes him even worse is his complete inability to admit he was, at least, partially at fault. Rightfully so, he was booed every time he touched the ball on Monday. And thankfully he had an absolutely abysmal game.
Ending up with not a single point, 1 rebound and 9 assists. Sounds familiar right? He still does have a lot of game left in him and he has been a fairly decent player for Stan Van Gundy and the Magic, but his ineptitude in Toronto will never be forgiven; nor forgotten.
On Monday he, ironically, was thoroughly outplayed by the hardworking James Johnson. It was delightful for the ACC crowd to watch him stink it up, and completely typical from anyone that watched Hedo over his time in Toronto. Give it up to the kid from Compton for bringing it on back to back nights. There is something different in him lately.
Casey cracked the code and has helped turn Derozan into a focused player who is playing in the flow of the offense. Specifically, driving the net, looking to draw contact, and not trying to shoot his way out of a slump. Even if he scored a billion points I would still put him here. He happened to score 0 points, 1 rebound and 9 assists. He looked terrible. His shot was awful and he was no match for James Johnson on either end of the floor.
One could argue that the booing got to him, but this is Hedo. Although still a useful player in Orlando, he looked as horrible as he did when he played here tonight.
Leave a comment. Filed under Post game , Raptor News. For three quarters the Raptors looked like a very strong basketball team. The effort from this team was, for the most part, something to applaud. Andrea Bargnani looked like a superstar out there for the third game in a row, Derozan battled through some early shooting trouble, and Jose Calderon was very effective at the point.
The Raptors battled and even had nice contributions from Jamal Magloire and Leandro Barbosa off the bench. This team continues to battle. They have shown much improved effort on the defensive end, especially in the first half tonight, and they are hanging with teams on most nights. The most impressive element of this loss is the way Andrea Bargnani has played. He looks every bit a superstar out there and he is making a case to continue as the face of this franchise.
It is way too early to even speculate about who will or wont make the All-star team, but if it were being held today, Andrea Bargnani would be on the roster. During his last few years he has been criticized for not caring, not battling and being very weak on the defensive end.
This is something that Toronto fans need to be happy about. Hedo Turkoglu was a factor in Orlando's fourth quarter comeback. Dwane Casey has said that his number one option on offense is Andrea Bargnani and his number two is Demar Derozan.
He is going to ride them all the way win or lose. This philosophy is both positive short-term because it allows us to see whether either player can handle the rigors and pressure that come with being a number one or number two option.
It also helps the Raps in the long-term because it signifies that this is their team. They will be the focal point offensively going forward and next year, when the games start to matter, they will be ready to lead. Say what you want about Jose Calderon. He seems to be the new poster boy for the haters out there, but he is one efficient point guard out there ont eh offensive end. His stats speak for themselves, but he really does put his teammates in good position out there and he protects the ball quite well.
Jose has been my favourite Raptor in his time in Toronto. Wow, can this guy shoot. He is a dangerous, dangerous player out there. The Raptors D did a pretty good job on the interior, but they fell asleep on this guy late in the game and he absolutely killed us. True, a lot of his minutes are going to Magloire and Amir definitely deserves to start, but I was expecting a lot more.
He is going to have to work a lot harder out there and take advantage of his reduced minutes in order to get more. Tagged as Andrea Bargnani , Ball! The two games played in Orlando and Miami offered Raptor fans a glimpse of what this young Raptor team is made of.
Both contests were very competitive and the Raptors, owner of one of the worst records in the league, held their own against two of the best the association has to offer. Demar Derozan is a player most fans want to become part of the future of this ball club.
He is fast, gets to the line and is developing a nice mid range game as well. Over the weekend he played against some of the very best guards in the league and held his own on the offensive end. There is no comparing Derozan to the likes of Wade, Carter and Lebron just yet, but he was no slouch in either of those matchups.
This may not be the kid the team ultimately builds around. Demar Derozan is showing improvements to his game this season and is becoming the go-to guy on this years squad. Demar also got to the free throw line 12 times against Orlando and 11 times against the Heat. This trend is very exciting if you are a Raptor fan. Both because one of the most exciting high flyers in the game is taking the ball to the rim regularly and because it results in easy buckets for a team that has a hard time scoring them.
Jay Triano has not been his typical Canadian self this year. He is not afraid to call a spade a spade and occasionally call his players out. Last week he called Sonny Weems out. Triano criticized his shot selection and Sonny has responded. Weems has been one of the best players on the court over the last week and is making the most of his shots 5 of 8 against Miami and 6 of 9 against Orlando.
Sonny sees himself as a rotation player in the NBA and with his recent play so do I. He is solid on the defensive end, something the Raptors have lacked over the last few years, and he is showing confidence and restraint on the offensive end.
When he plays in control, he can be a very effective tool for the Raps. The Raptors are made up of a mix bag this year. The Raptors have a group of young men who are not afraid to get dirty; not afraid to engage in battle against opponents who, on paper, are more impressive. Orlando and Miami are very likely to be two of the teams left at the end of the season when the dust settles, the Raptors gave both teams all they could handle this weekend.
Andrea, Demar and Sonny have been the offensive force of this team. Amir Johnson looked good, but needs to find a way to stay on the court. Reggie was a big loss in Miami, but looks to be the energy of this team. David Anderson, Joey Dorsey and Leandro Barbosa are providing meaningful minutes off the bench and Jack and Calderon are steady at the helm. This is a team that may not win as many games as last year, but they are not going to ever be an easy W for an opposing team.
Andrea Bargnani had two strong offensive games in Florida. He was facing his former teammate at least when Bosh was able to stay on the floor and he held his own. Bargnani has a deadly shot, this is something no one can deny, but his defensive game and his rebounding skills are what need serious work. This is something the fans know, the coaches know, and it looks as though Bargnani is finally figuring it out as well. The Raptors can add another building block to the puzzle if Andrea can strengthen his defensive game.
Being Prepared is half the battle. This is something that Triano and his staff understand. You could see the intensity from the get-go in Orlando and the game plan on attacking Chris Bosh worked to perfection.
This team is buying into what the coaches are selling and it is evident on the court. Defensive energy is up and the team is sharing the ball on offense. One of the best parts of not having a legitimate superstar is not having to get that superstar their share of the ball. The team came in prepared for the tilts in Florida and they competed against the best as a result.
Filed under Editorial , Raptor News. The Raptors were not expected to win this game. Forget about the fact that Orlando is a sure-fire playoff contender and the Raptors are hoping to maybe crack the 8th spot if a whole lot of things go right. The Raptors were also down a few key guys. Kleiza, Barbosa and David Anderson were all nursing injuries. No chance right? The Raptors and the coaching staff found the right mix on the floor and had their team well prepared for this game.
During the broadcast Armstrong and Devlin mentioned it many times. Most importantly it was evident to anyone watching the game that he played the players that had earned the minutes. Derozan had one of his best games as a pro. Weems also had a solid game as did Calderon.
It was Julian Wright and Amir Johnson that helped get Toronto up in the second half and Bargnani showed flashes of what we all want him to do except rebound for most of the game. It was also nice to see Joey Dorsey contribute in minor role off the bench.
What was more important was that I was out at a bar usually filled with hockey fans and the entire bar was glued to the raptor game late in the fourth quarter. This team has a loyal following. Management should keep this in mind as it moves forward. All you have to do in this town to win respect is win games.
It is easy for a team to get down on itself after losing two games at home to teams it should, by right, defeat, but the Raptors came out with the kind of energy that a team with a record of comes out with. They hung with one of the best teams in the league for the entire game and made things quite difficult for the Magic all night long.
Kudos to Jay Triano and his staff for having this team ready to fight and kudos to the good guys for not letting their record get them down. Sadly I do not think it has been unwarranted. Jose has had a terrible start to the year and cannot sem to find his groove. Tonight he found that groove. He distributed the ball very well ll night long and his shots were falling a little more than they have been.
He also got to the line against the Magic something he, as an excellent free throw shooter, must do.
Most importantly, he looked confident. We have not seen that in Jose all season. Maybe it was the effects of the trade that never was or the fact that he lost his starting spot to Jack once again maybe his shoes were too tight. Whatever it was, his heart or his shoes, he had certainly earned his fair share of boos. But give credit where credit is due. Tonight Jose was the captain of the ship during the most important parts of the game.
He earned the right to be the guy on the floor at the end of the game. Just as one final shout-out to those that dislike him, he had the key defensive play to seal the win.
Demr Derozan showed signs he is the future of the franchise against Orlando. He finished with a career high 26 points in the win. You could forgive the casual fan from asking who all these players were playing in red. The Raptors are made up of a strange combination of players. Throw in David Anderson, Linas Kleiza and Solomon Alabi are not household names either, but here they are all helping this team.
The Raptors are going to win a few games just they way they did against the Magic, with sheer effort and by doing those little things. Now I believe that Triano is doing all he can with the players he has but he will be the fall guy when this teams record gets out of hand. Last night the Raps pulled one out for their coach and it may quiet the boo-birds for a little while. There will be change in Raptorland before the end of this season.
Hopefully it starts nd ends with Peddie. Triano needs a team to work with and Colangelo is a good rebuilder of teams. There were many good performances out there from Calderon, Bargnani and Sonny Weems, but Derozan looked, for the first time, as the go-to guy on offense. He drove to the net, went to the line twelve times and was able to grab seven boards well. He looked very comfortable out there and needs to continue finding his game within the flow of the offense.
The sooner he and Jay realize that he should be one of, if not the first, option on offense; the sooner we see more games like tonight. Nice beard buddy. Usually Air Carter has great games against his former teammates but he looked pretty non-essential against the Raps. If Orlando ever hope to match up with the big three in Miami and Boston they will need Vince to step it up.
That beard might be the first thing to lose. You never want to look ugly when you lose. Cleveland and Toronto will probably be the most affected by the signings in Miami, but make no mistake about it, there will be shockwaves all over the NBA. Teams will change their views of how to build a winner and teams that were close to contending before, may find themselves on the outside looking in. The Raptors came to within one game of making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference this year and one would have to assume that their chances have taken a big hit with the loss of their best player, and leader, Chris Bosh.
Bosh was the centrepiece of the offense in Toronto and the main go-getter of rebounds. He was a leader on and off the court and was the sole reason the Raps were able to keep pace with many teams night after night. Without that kind of contribution, one would have to assume, the Raptors will be hard pressed to see any kind of success next year or playoff basketball. Playoff spots are almost certain, barring injury, to teams like Miami, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta, and Chicago.
All of those teams kept major players or made strong upgrades through free agency. That only leaves three more spots for the playoffs next season. Those spots are likely to be teams that are thrashed in the first round by the teams mentioned. Colangelo is moving forward following the departure of Chris Bosh and his efforts could finally land the Raptors in the playoffs.
My feeling is that the Raptors will be more competitive than anyone gives them credit for. They will not be predicted as one of the top eight teams in the East, but they have as good a shot as anyone. Without Chris Bosh, the Raptors must alter their game plan. Good thing the Raptors have a GM that is good at changing up his game plan.
Chris Bosh was the focus of the offense for the Raptors and as a result their offensive sets often involved giving Bosh the ball and waiting for him to shoot, drive or kick out to a shooter. This plan got a little stale and as a result teams found the Raptors easier and easier to defend. With no Chris Bosh, the Raptors will be able to change-up their offensive sets. Ball handlers, shooters, guys that can drive, guys that feed on putbacks.
Players will be allowed to be themselves, focus on their strengths and compliment each other. The American Dream Team had a very hard time defeating the Spanish National team over the last few years.
The Dream Team had the talent, as Miami now does, but the Spanish utilized an unselfish, team oriented style of basketball. In the end the Spanish team gave the U. Colangelo watched as the Spanish team spread the ball around the floor and defeated the highly touted American squad. He has at his disposal a number of exciting, young players that have no problem sharing the ball. He has a massive trade exception at his disposal as well as expiring contracts in Marcus Banks and Reggie Evans.
You can also be assured that one of his point guards will be dealt before the season begins. More weapons to help build his team-oriented strategy. Team oriented championships have happened before. One needs to look no farther than Detroit to see that a team can win without a proven star player.
One thing is certain though. This team will be exciting to watch. They will play a different style of ball and new players will share the leadership role. They have enough talent to compete for one of the spots not held by the upper echelon teams in the East. While Bosh, Lebron and Wade will have difficulties sharing the ball next season, the Raptors will be full of players that want to share the ball and will do anything asked to make the team better.
Is it just me or did the Cavaliers do their best Raptor impression during the last series with the Celtics? The only bump in the road was expected to be the Magic from Orlando. There will be a lot of soul searching for Lebron this summer as his Cavaliers were once again bounced from the playoffs. The Cavaliers were led by their superstar de jour: Lebron James.
He did everything a superstar was supposed to do during the regular season, but was criticized heavily during this series. His heart and defensive ability came into question, despite scoring a triple-double in the decisive game 6. Does this not remind you of The Raptors superstar de jour: Chris Bosh? Who played incredibly well during the first half of the season. Not MVP well, but well enough to lead his team to the playoffs. He was a little tentative, not aggressive on the defensive end and his heart was called into question.
All of this, despite leading his team in scoring and averaging a double-double all season long. Both are superstars that did not lead the way a Kobe or Jordan led. Both put up amazing individual numbers, but neither could lead their team to the collective goal of winning. He was injured for parts of the season and looked old out there on a regular basis. He was a bust of an acquisition that was supposed to put the Cavaliers over the edge. There was no player that was more disappointing this season than Shaq.
